Jimmy Talks-a-lot

Several years ago I saw a picture of a busker in New Orleans on flickr. You would think he wasn't much to look at, but I instantly realized he knew what he was doing. It wasn't his suspenders or hat that most people would have noticed, but rather his "Magic Show" sign - the second I saw that sign I knew he was the real deal.

Nobody ever told me I needed a "Magic Show" sign, I just figured it out somehow. Some people have tried to tell me I should have a sign that says "JoeJoe" - but Jimmy is like me and knows that nobody knows who JoeJoe or Jimmy are, so a sign with our name doesn't do us any good. If you sell watches your sign read "Watches" and if you sell pizza your sign says "Pizza". We sell magic shows so our sign says Magic Shows. It seems like a no-brainer, but I don't think that many wanna-be street performers ever realized it till Jimmy tipped it.

So a few years later I get the privilege to see a video of Jimmy, and he certainly didn't disappoint. Sure enough, Jimmy knew what he was doing and has taken the magic community by storm with his unique style of entertaining. He now has a fan club and a book deal and has helped steer a lot of people that want to street perform in the right direction.

I haven't had the honor of meeting him in person, but we've had lots of chat online and I can say that there is just something special about Jimmy. Jimmy is perhaps the only person in the entire world that actually understands what I am doing - we are on the same cosmic wave length or something. Oh sure, I can make a post and someone will come along and say you are so right Joe and claim they understand - but they really don't. At least not at the same level that Jimmy does.

See, this isn't a "job" to us ... it's a way of thinking, it's a way of being ... a way of life even. Jimmy can goto any street corner in the world and work right out of his pockets - he takes a lot of crap about it and is always nice no matter how hard you beat him over the head about it and he shouldn't be taking any flack because he is making it work and doing it the way he wants to.

Jimmy has been the single greatest influence on me in recent years, he has made me rethink all the crap and dumb ideas people have been putting into my head all this time. Thanks to Jimmy I have returned to my roots and rediscovered what it was I set out to do in the first place, reinventing myself as myself. I can't thank him enough, Jimmy you rock dude!

Summer has been good to me, and I'm going to be buying Jimmy's book. And I highly recommend you check out the new Sidewalk Performers message boards, you do need to be a magician to join ... it's worth your time and trouble, just to get access to Jimmy and his street performing friends. And here is a clip of Jimmy performing, enjoy!
